A Message from the President

– Ella R. Whitehead

Welcome to the Northshore Section of NCNW! At Northshore Chicago NCNW, we are proud to continue the legacy of leadership and service envisioned by our founder, Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune.

Our mission is simple but powerful: to empower women, uplift families, and strengthen our communities. Through education, health initiatives, economic development, and advocacy, we work every day to build a brighter, more equitable future.

I invite you to join us — as a member, volunteer, or supporter — and be part of the change we are creating together.
Thank you for visiting. We look forward to welcoming you into our sisterhood of service.

The North Shore Section is a vibrant community of women committed to uplifting, advocating, and serving families and communities of the Illinois North Shore and beyond.

The National Council of Negro Women (NCNW)

was founded in 1935 by Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune. NCNW 's mission is to lead, advocate for and empower women of African descent, their families and communities.

The North Shore Section of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) was chartered to address the need for a dedicated NCNW presence in the Evanston/Skokie community.

The North Shore Section of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) was chartered to address the need for a dedicated NCNW presence in the Evanston/Skokie community. Recognizing the importance of establishing a section to serve and empower African American women in the area, community leaders—Ashley Jackson, Tracy Fulce, Krissie Harris, Damita Cravens, and Ella Whitehead—came together to form the initial organizing committee.

The committee held its first official meeting on Friday, July 16, 2024. Following this, invitations were sent out to other women in the community to join their efforts. This outreach resulted in 36 women joining the organizing committee as charter members, demonstrating strong community interest and support for the initiative. Through collaborative efforts and shared vision, the North Shore Section was officially chartered as a section of the NCNW on June 7th, 2025. This milestone marked the beginning of a thriving and influential section dedicated to enhancing community engagement, providing vital resources, and continuing the NCNW's mission of improving the quality of life for women of African descent and their communities. The section's foundation was built on unity, education, and empowerment, setting the stage for lasting impact in the North Shore area.
